Meta-Insights and Actionable Insights

After having first insights from last week, I continued my interviews and talked with three more people. I intended to have a better understanding of the outcomes of the last interviews. My questions were made to analyze, places where people see as the most local place in the city, also what it means to be local, and how they interact with locals when they discover the city.

“Restaurants that don’t have English menus are the most local places for me because that feels more authentic…”

The second intention was to question commuting within the city as previously I found out that people prefer routes rather than some specific spots. I already talked about biking with three people. I decided to stop having interviews about biking in the city because it is already a way of commuting and I realized I can find information under the “Traveling & Discovering a New City” topic. Recently I’ve been reading and researching how the circular economy can be applied to cities to have less impact on the environment. I find that people are mostly interested in walking or using public transportation when they explore a new city. I questioned if it is related to the budget and found out that even the budget is high, people feel they explore more by walking or biking. I think that is very important because people contribute to the “ circular city” concept even though they are not directly thinking about it. ( People mostly don’t think about their impact when they travel, they are aware that they make more carbon footprint when they travel) That outcome encouraged me to go deeper on this subject.

“I loved the route from Times Square to Central Park. It is very impressive because after a very dense urban pattern a huge park welcomes you, you can not experience it if you use the metro”

One of the surprising outcomes was friends play an important role in having an idea about the city. People feel more comfortable asking their friends about where to go, what to do and even friends are the reasons for deciding on the next destination for holidays.

“I would ask my friends for advice, they already know what you are interested in and that’s a good filter “

The third important part about the interviews was trying to understand where people have difficulties when they go to another city. As I divided the process into two parts ( before the trip and during the trip) I got very useful insights from the answers. There is a secret workload searching for info about the city before the trip. People check multiple platforms to get information. That can be overwhelming. Also, they feel limited or they don’t trust the sources. I asked them which platforms and apps they use, what are the pros and cons of these mediums to have a better understanding of what works and what is missing. Another important outcome for the ‘before trip’ part was that people want to be flexible with their plans. Especially when they are on a vocation. Traveling for business is another story but the common outcome was they want to have alternative plans and they want to have a common platform for communicating with friends.

Rearranging Insights

After completing interviews with three more people, I reorganized my insights then started grouping them. That was a very helpful exercise because there are many repetitive patterns and behaviors which help me to focus on specific problems in the next steps. I also color-coded them in terms of how people feel when they go through the insights.

Color-coding according to users feeling

After finding out the patterns I tried to have smaller groups for my key points. That exercise helped me to have my meta-insights and actionable insights.

Having meta insights and grouping the insights according to patterns.

Then I digitized my findings for the actionable insights.

Using Miro App for digitizing the outcomes.

It’s time to organize everything for the presentation on Monday.

See you next week!
